MARK YOUR CALENDAR
CELEBRATING PRESBYTERIAN HERITAGE
SUNDAY MAY 23, 2004

Our Presbyterian heritage is always honored the Sunday closest to May 19th, the date of the first Presbytery formation in colonial America.

Presbyterians have a great and wonderful heritage to celebrate. Presbyterian faith offers hope and wholeness to all of God's people. Hope lies in becoming part of what God is doing today and First Presbyterian is a presence of hope for a
world in which God is working.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

IMPORTANT NEWS:
At the last session meeting it was discussed and decided that beginning
In May all committees would meet on the same Sunday evening. All committees will meet Sunday May 23rd following a church wide "pot luck" dinner.
A nursery will be available.

Dinner will be served at 5:00 PM,
Committees meet beginning at 6:00 PM.

It is the hope of the session that this schedule will afford members a better opportunity to become involved in the church's committees. All church members
are invited to the dinner regardless of your decision to join or not join a committee of the church.

A sign up sheet for the dinner is in the fellowship hall

WE'RE ROCKIN' AGAIN!

After a hiatus, THE ROCK GROUP is back in business, gathering children from 3rd to 6th grade for fun and fellowship. So far, all gatherings have been on Sunday afternoons, with the next scheduled meeting on May 16. This is an exciting addition to the opportunities our church provides for children and youth age members. If you or someone you know might like to join the fun, call the church office for more information.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
JUNE 14-17

9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon
3YRS - 6Th GRADE

Ready to have a HOT time this summer?

This year's theme is "Lava Lava Island: Where Jesus' Love Flows".

Lava Lava Island is an exciting way for kids to learn more about Jesus' Love. We'll be studying stories about the life of Jesus. Plus, kids will join nearly a million children in North America and take part in a hands-on mission project that will reach needy children in the Caribbean and Latin America. We will conclude each day with a festive Lava Lava Luau that gets everyone involved in celebrating what we've learned. We hope Lava Lava Island will help Jesus' love flow into our community.

So get out your leis and dust off your hula skirts, this year's VBS is gonna be a BLAST!!!

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

HELP! We need your ideas. You see we have two adult classes on Sunday morning. The problem is that both classes have room for more adults and there are empty chairs. Ah, maybe you are not aware that we have Adult Sunday School, that could be the reason for the empty chairs.
Let me tell you a little about these two classes.

In the conference room, we are studying the Bible using material supported by the Presbyterian Church. New studies come each quarter. This quarter we have studied the Passion Narratives and now we are looking at living expectantly via Thessalonians and Revelations. Next quarter we will be looking at Hebrews, Timothy and Titus. The shepherd for this class is David Powell.

In the Presbyterian Women's room, we are studying prayer using a book to guide the discussion. When we complete this study, we are looking at discussing the Beatitudes or some other study the group might find of interest. The shepherd for this class is Randy Roland.
If we are missing what you are looking for in an adult class, please talk to Nancy Tiegreen or myself.
      Yours in Christian Fellowship,
      David Powell

Every month, when newsletter time comes 'round, there is an opportunity to take stock. Many questions come to mind in such a process. How many people are involved in the church's various education programs? Are those who teach being supported with materials and guides to assist in making their teaching meaningful? And what about teaching? Are we overworking some while others who might want to teach are not involved right now?

Depending on who you are, and your perspective, these questions could be answered differently. We know that we offer two Adult Education classes, with very good teaching and attendance. We have asked before that people bring us ideas for classes that could augment what we offer, or that might be planned when another topic is considered for an existing class. We have requested that teachers be forthright about their needs, and for the most part, they have been. The matter of teaching and of feeling overworked are both best answered by those engaged in the programs week by week. Certainly they are a dedicated bunch. They show up here on Sunday mornings, or find someone else who can come in their place. They study the materials provided, and give their best in order that people of all ages here may know more and understand more about God. Their dedication and dependability make it difficult to know about overwork. I pray daily for these people, and their commitment to the spreading of God's Word. They are the ones among us who are right out front, responding to one of the instructions Jesus left with us: "Go into all the world, making disciples." After parents, they are the ones who fulfill most directly our commitment to nurture and support those who come to us through baptism and confirmation.

One question remains: are there those among you who might want to be involved with some part of this program? I know that Presbyterians, generally, like to be invited to share their gifts and skills. So now I hope you will read this as a personal invitation, and one from the Christian Education Committee of the church, to join us in work that is rewarding, responding in faith to our God...with the possibility for fun, sometimes, too.

After a brief meeting over dinner, we will have an activity the Coordinating Team hopes all will enjoy. In order to pull it off, I need for everyone to send me one interesting -but little known- fact about yourself. (FOR MY EYES ONLY until the meeting!) For example, you were prom queen, you ride motorcycles on the weekend, your were in the Peace Corps. you worked in the circus in your youth, you raised goats…you get the idea. I will compile all these, and we will spend the remainder of our meeting trying to figure out which fact relates to which First Presbyterian woman!
