One Great Hour Of Sharing

"Serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received." (1 Peter 4:10b)
In abundance, you have given.
In need, you have gladly received.
In both, you have known grace.
As comfort is offered and accepted in a single embrace, any gift freely given resounds, from India to Senegal, Sierra Leone to Kosovo, El Salvador to your own Community.

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering unites people across loss and gain through a common need: love.

Your OGH of Sharing offering helps people
· feed, support and speak for themselves and their families
· learn new skills and trades
· obtain better health care
· find a safe refuge to start their lives again
· see hope in the face of disaster
· survive and work toward a better life.

As you have been served, may you also serve; as you have received Christ's grace, may you also give.

In the name of Christ's abundant love, let us joyfully join with all Christ's children around the world in sharing one with another.

As people of God, we receive a wealth of gifts from God which flow through us to enrich the lives of others. Through One Great Hour we commit to help those who are most vulnerable.

The offering will be received Palm Sunday.

BAKE SALE: Is everyone tired of bake sales?? Well, Erin and I are and I'll be out of town next week soooooooooooooooo….we have canceled the bake sale for March. Thanks for all your contributions to the bake sale at the garden show. It was a great success. The bake sale made approximately $250. Also, we talked about a theme bake sale for April. How about focusing on breads… if you have a good bread recipe bring that, either a sweet bread (banana, zucchini, pumpkin etc.) or a bread, bread (dill, wheat, jalapeno cheese etc.) but if you don't bake bread, then anything is fine.
     Thanks, Mary Crutchfield

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

World Day of Prayer is an annual event that unites Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian men and women from all over the world in prayer.

Since its founding in 1941, Church Women United has been the official sponsor of World Day of Prayer in the United States. The offerings received make possible, in part, the mission of Church Women United, and support its national and international commitment to eliminate the poverty of women and children, and build a world of peace and justice.

Plan now to attend the World Day of Prayer on March 7th. This year the event will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Heath, 11:30 AM. A light lunch will be served following the services.

Long Range Planning

The LRP Group will continue meetings during the month of March starting after Sunday worship at about 12:30 pm. The meetings are scheduled for 3/2, 3/16 and 3/30 and each person brings his/her lunch. We anticipate that meetings for April and subsequent may be held in the evenings on days and times convenient to the majority. We are studying the book "Raising the Roof - the Pastoral-to-Program Size Transition" by Alice Mann. Anyone is welcome to attend - to join or just visit and see what's going on. We meet in the conference room in the Education Wing. This is an exciting time for our church as we work through the issues associated with change and growth.

Summary of the 2/23/03 Information Meeting
Approximately 50 or so folks enjoyed a meal provided by members of the Session. The crowd consumed the ham, baked beans, Creole black-eyed peas, scalloped potatoes, salads and desserts. The meal was a prelude to the information briefing given by Bob Reeves and Bill Sinclair.
The briefing, entitled "A Time for Discernment", was facilitated by a projection system provided by David Crutchfield and used color PowerPoint charts. This meeting was the first of several steps involved in growing our ordained church staff. The basic themes of the briefing were: (1) We're at a crossroads and need to seek God's guidance for which bridge to cross; (2) A message from the bible; (3) Definitions of co-pastor and associate pastor and how their roles compare; (4) Review and discussion of the September survey and how that relates to the decision to be made; and
(5) Congregational brainstorming on characteristics and potential duties of the soon to be sought after minister.

There was a lot of discussion about the differences between co- and associate pastors. Questions were posed by those present and were fielded by Bob. It was pointed out that a co-pastor position was proposed in the budget since we believed Kathy Collier would be filling the slot, and a good working relationship had already been established between her and Bob. Now that we have to go out and search for someone, it is prudent to reconsider. Bob stated, in response to a congregant's question, that he had no near-term plans to retire.
The question was posed about why we didn't just hire a full time Director of Christian Education. At this time it does not appear that our church requires someone full time in this position - this opinion was also expressed by Kathy Collier during the period of time she fulfilled those duties. A thoughtful opinion came from a congregant who stated that doing this would place a limitation on the church, since some of the duties to be performed require an ordained minister. Another aspect was could we find a minister whose primary interest was CE? The response was yes, these people do exist; not every one aspires to be a preaching pastor.
Those present participated in a brainstorming process to develop a list of personal attributes and duties to be performed by the new staff member. This turned out to be an enjoyable activity and many folks made contributions to the list. The Session will use this data to develop selection criteria and a prioritized list of duties to be used by the "search committee".
Subsequent to Sunday's meeting the following are the latest procedural steps from Presbytery and rough estimates of timing:

1. Congregation meeting to declare the position of Co. or Assoc. Open (this would be 3/23)
2. Vision statement to be written by the session
3. Contact to be made with John Purcell, liaison of Presbytery's Committee on Ministry (COM) for vacancy consultation with the session (maybe early April).
· Vision statement submitted to liaison
· Request to COM to elect Associate or Co Pulpit Nominating Committee (PNC)
4. Permission from COM for Congregation Meeting to elect PNC
5. Congregation meeting to elect PNC (maybe late April)
6. Contact made with liaison of COM
7. PNC meets with liaison to begin Church Information Form (CIF) preparation
8. Session approval of CIF (maybe early May)
9. COM reviews CIF (accepts or refers back)
10. PNC begins search process (maybe late May or early June)

Those present at the meeting voted to delay the Congregational meeting from March 16th to March 23rd to avoid the impact of Spring Break for schools. It was initially thought that we would vote on both the type of the position and the members of the Search Committee, which is actually referred to as the Pulpit Nominating Committee as shown above.
The meeting adjourned about 8:15 pm. A copy of the briefing materials will be on display in the Fellowship Hall until the Congregational meeting on March 23rd. CHECK IT OUT! The briefing can also be viewed online by clicking here. Kudos to Joel Roberson!
