LONG RANGE PLANNING

The Session has approved a vision statement for the church. It will be combined with the church's mission statement and published for the congregation.

Writing continues on the draft of the long-range plan. The next LRP group
meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 15th at 12:30 PM following worship.

NOTES FROM NANCY

This past month has been something of an adventure as I have begun to be
better acquainted with all of you-getting names straight, and getting families
sorted out. The job is only partly completed! Our Session Retreat this past
weekend has helped me to know the people who are first in line to answer
basic questions about the Christian Education program already in place here.
It's clear that the committee charged with planning and with recruiting our
top notch teachers are a dedicated and creative group of people.

Our present education program includes a preschool class, Workshop Rotation classes for first through sixth grade children (though I understand that we presently do not have any sixth graders) and two classes for adults. This program is designed, now, to bring to light the stories of our faith, including becoming better acquainted with the life and teachings of Jesus. One adult class studies the scriptures while the other class has begun to learn more about prayer. We are excited to have offered a Workshop Rotation series on the Parable of the Sower, and to have had Rev. Reeves highlight our study with a dialog sermon, calling attention to the beautiful stained glass window that depicts the parable.

Our program now looks impressive, and keeping it working smoothly is only one of the things we work on as we focus on Christian Education for this faith community. We must always keep the faith formation of this community in mind as we seek to design and present meaningful materials, whether it be in the Sunday School hour or in the extended life of our congregation. Faith formation is the name given to the gathering and listing of the congregation's hopes for the future. It takes into account faith development, the church's overall stated mission, and any hopes-goals-we have as individuals that we may share.

The work of this area of the church's life changes often, so that we must constantly ask questions about our community's needs. Who are the learners here? Are there needs that are specific to our community, and to Rockwall? Do we have special needs as a community, or do we have special talents to share in the greater Rockwall community?

Since I am new to the church community, I will be asking questions, and listening to hear your hopes and concerns for our future here. I am excited to be working with all of you, particularly the staff and this capable, caring and creative Christian Education Committee.

Blessings, Nancy T.
