LENT

The season of Lent spans 40 weekdays beginning on Ash Wednesday and climaxing during Holy Week with Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, and concluding Saturday before Easter. Originally, Lent was the time of preparation for those who were to be baptized, a time of concentrated study and prayer before their baptism at the Easter Vigil, the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord early on Easter Sunday. But since these new members were to be received into a living community of faith, the entire community was called to preparation. Also, this was the time when those who had been separated from the Church would prepare to rejoin the community.

Today, Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate Easter. Since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. The number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his ministry Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 13th with a service at 7:00 PM. Ash Wednesday says: “Remember.” Remember that because of Jesus’ death we too will experience a resurrection like His. For Jesus’ death remembered now, yields life hereafter, and that life is forever.

CONFIRMATION CLASS

Confirmation classes for youth 7th grade and up begins Sunday February 17th. Confirmation classes are traditionally held during Lent. The goal of the class is to enable youth to answer the question: “Am I ready to confirm my faith and become an active member of the church and take my place in its life as a responsible member?” This is an important question in the life of young people, because it means they are deciding who is the Lord of their life.

For more information please contact Bob Reeves or Kathryn Carpenter.

One Great Hour Of Sharing

Share God’s Gifts With People in Need

The offering will be received Palm Sunday, March 24, 2002.

Serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. (1Peter 4:10)

One of the striking things about OGH of Sharing is how it weaves together the gifts of people around the world into a fabric of hope. That includes our financial gifts, which are in a sense a medium through which God’s grace can be shared.

THE 2ND ANNUAL CRAFT AND GARDEN SHOW
SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 2002
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
The Presbyterian Women are calling for all volunteers. The 2nd annual Craft and Garden Show is just around the corner. We need you to help spread the word.
This year we are adding the “Garden” aspect to the show. We still want craft and direct selling vendors (ex: Mary Kay, Discovery Toys etc.) but we also want landscape, yard art, gardening centers and the like as well. We will have booth space indoors and outdoors to accommodate their display needs. We are also adding speakers all day long to help bring in the crowds. It was discussed to have a landscape architect, a live cooking demo maybe someone speaking on bugs (of course those two topics would be separated! Ha Ha….a mixture of topics to appeal to everyone.
The luncheon and silent auction were a big success last year and are back as well. So, we need you now to help us tell everyone about it. Please tell your neighbors, your co-workers, family and friends. If you have a community bulletin board at work, please put some information on it. Anyone wanting information can contact Laura Tennent. (You can put my name and number on this board.)
There is a sign up sheet in the fellowship hall for volunteers the day of the event.
Let’s make this year's event bigger and better than ever. Proceeds will benefit the Prayer Garden and other mission projects that the Presbyterian Women support.

Thanks in advance for your help,
The Presbyterian Women

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

FRIDAY MARCH 1, 2002
11:00 AM
World Day of Prayer is an annual event that unites Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian men and women from all over the world in prayer. Since its founding in 1941, Church Women United has been the official sponsor of World Day of Prayer in the United States. The offerings received make possible, in part, the mission of church Women United, and support its national and international commitment to eliminate the poverty of women and children, and build a world of peace and justice. Plan now to attend the World Day of Prayer on March 1, 2002, 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Heath. A light lunch will be served following the service.

SOUPER BOWL

The Souper Bowl is an effort to glorify God and care for “the least of these” by encouraging people to give one dollar each as they leave worship on Super Bowl Sunday. Our youth collected donations last Sunday, but for those of you who were not in church last Sunday or if you would like to donate another dollar, they will be at the exits and collect donations again this Sunday. This money will be sent to the Rockwall County Helping Hands food pantry.
